1974797 - HLM: Updating an SAP HANA system whose database server is stopped

Symptom
You are using SAP HANA lifecycle manager SPS 07 patch level 01 or higher and you are trying to update an SAP HANA system whose database is not running.

Reason and Prerequisites
To be able to update a normal SAP HANA system (an SAP HANA system which is not a part of a high-availability setup and which is not running in a replication mode), you need its database server up and running. However, enhancements in SAP HANA lifecycle manager SPS 07 patch level 01 provide a workaround for updating your SAP HANA database server even if it is stopped.


Solution
We recommend that the SAP HANA database server is up and running when you are updating a normal SAP HANA system, otherwise, system inconsistencies may occur after the update. However, if for some reason you cannot start the database server of such a system, use the following workaround which allows you to update an SAP HANA database server while it is stopped:
  1. In SAP HANA lifecycle manager, start the Apply Single Support Packages task.
  2. During the update, if you are prompted for them, enter the user name and password for the <SID>adm user. 
  3. Select the proposed software releases.
  4. When prompted to select the type of the SAP HANA system, select Primary and then follow the instruction in the wizard to complete the task.
The Primary option is designed to update the components of an SAP HANA system which is running in a high-availability setup. However, you can use this option as a workaround for updating a stopped SAP HANA database server.  Note that during the update, SAP HANA content such as SAP HANA SHINE, SAP HANA EPM Service, SAP HANA INA toolkit, and SAP HANA RDL cannot be deployed. Be aware that in this scenario you cannot update your SAP HANA studio repository.
 The above workaround is available only for the single SP (applying single support packages) update scenario. It is not available for the SPS (applying support package stack) update scenario.
