Symptom
- Recovery of HANA Database fails and in the backup.log trace file you have this error: convert topology failed, mismatch: 1 esservers configured in source topology, 0 in destination system -> stopping instance.
- In the source system where the backup was taken the SAP HANA dynamic tiering component is installed.
- In the target HANA system where the recovery is executed the dynamic tiering component is not installed.
Environment
HANA Database 1.0.
Reproducing the Issue
- Take a backup from a HANA system that has SAP HANA dynamic tiering component installed.
- Use this backup for recovery in target HANA system where SAP HANA dynamic tiering component is not installed.
Cause
It is not possible to do the recovery in this case (where source
system has SAP HANA dynamic tiering and target system for recovery does
not) because after recovery the Hana catalog would be broken.
It would have dynamic tiering catalog information but with no dynamic tiering installed. In general recovery is expected to leave the target system in a consistent state.

Resolution
There are two options available to handle this scenario:
- If you do not need SAP HANA dynamic tiering you should use a backup which does not have SAP HANA dynamic tiering.
- In the target system for recovery install SAP HANA dynamic tiering and after a successful recovery remove the SAP HANA dynamic tiering.

In the SAP HANA dynamic tiering administration guide in the section Recovering SAP HANA Databases with Dynamic Tiering under the header Restrictions on Recovery it is clearly stated that the number and type of services must be identical in both the source and target system.
