Symptom
This is a SAP note with specific information about SAP HANA smart data access.
Other Terms
data federation, query federation, SAP HANA appliance, SAP HANA platform,
Reason and Prerequisites
You are using the SAP HANA platform as of SPS06. With SAP HANA SPS06
SAP HANA smart data access has been shipped for the first time.
Solution
1. What is SAP HANA smart data access?
SAP HANA smart data access enables remote data to be accessed via SQL queries as if they are local tables in HANA, without copying the data into SAP HANA. Not only does this capability provide operational and cost benefits, but most importantly it supports the development and deployment of the next generation of analytical applications which require the ability to access, synthesize and integrate data from multiple systems in real-time regardless of where the data is located or what systems are generating it.
Specifically, in SAP HANA, you can create virtual tables which point to remote tables in different data sources. Customers can then write SQL queries in SAP HANA, which could operate on virtual tables. The HANA query processor optimizes these queries, and executes the relevant part of the query in the target database, returns the results of the query to HANA, and completes the operation.
2. Where to find SAP HANA smart data access documentation?
For SAP HANA documentation, see SAP Help Portal:

4. Other supported remote sources by SAP HANA smart data access
SAP HANA smart data access can leverage additional adapters provided by SAP HANA smart data integration (SDI). Pre-Requisite: If required, customers need to licence the SAP HANA EIM option. The Data Provisioning Server in the HANA instance has to be enabled. All supported SAP HANA SDI adapters are listed under https://support.sap.com/content/dam/library/ssp/infopages/pam-essentials/pam-hana-sdi-1.0.pdf.
Further information about setup and installation of SAP HANA SDI adapters can be found in the SAP HANA EIM Administration Guide -> Data Provisioning Adapaters
5. Future support of new adapters to 3rd party remote sources by SAP HANA smart data access
All future and new adapters to 3rd party remote sources (non-SAP) will be provided by SAP HANA smart data integration. Please check regularly the PAM for SAP HANA smart data integration under https://support.sap.com/content/dam/library/ssp/infopages/pam-essentials/pam-hana-sdi-1.0.pdf. Customers have to fullfill the pre-requisites as described under "4. Other supported remote sources by SAP HANA smart data access".
