1803981 - Correcting SP stack number of a HANA system

Symptom
Lifecycle management tools do not recognize the correct SP stack number of a HANA system.

Other Terms
SAP HANA On-Site Configuration tool; SUM for SAP HANA; HANA Lifecycle Management

Reason and Prerequisites
The overall system version is maintained in configuration files under
/user/sap/<SID>/lm_structure
SUM for SAP HANA updates the system version only when a stack.xml is used.
If the system is updated without SUM for SAP HANA or without using Support Package Stack option in SUM for SAP HANA, then the system version is not updated. The reason is that the additional metadata required for this is contained only in stack.xml.

Note that there are additional HANA components besided HANA database, client and studio. To ensure consistent operation, all HANA components should be updated to the versions defined in the respective SP stack.

To avoid such situatons, it is highly recommended to use the Support Package Stack option in SUM for SAP HANA when updating the whole system to higher SP stack.

Solution

A) If some system components are still on older versions compared to the versions in the desired SP stack.
(You can see the required component versions in the stack.xml.)
Update the whole system using Support Package Stack option in SUM for SAP HANA. This will also update the system version.
For more information how to apply a SP stack, see SAP HANA Automated Update Guide on http://help.sap.com/hana_appliance.
B) If all system components are already on the same or newer versions compared to the versions in the desired SP stack.
In this case SUM for SAP HANA will reject the stack as it contains no
applicable component updates.
Then you have to set the system version manually in
/user/sap/<SID>/lm_structure/currentStack.properties
You can find the correct values in the respective stack.xml.

stackID = <sp-stack/ppms-number>
stackCaption = <sp-stack/caption>
stackReleaseDate = <sp-stack/release-date>

NOTE that these values are different for different SAP HANA editions.

Here are some examples.
HANA Platform Edition SPS04
stackID = 67837800103300003782
stackCaption = 04 (05/2012)
stackReleaseDate = 2012-05-11
HANA Enterprise Edition SPS04
stackID = 67837800103300003784
stackCaption = 04 (05/2012)
stackReleaseDate = 2012-05-11
HANA Enterprise Extended Edition SPS04
stackID = 67837800103300003783
stackCaption = 04 (05/2012)
stackReleaseDate = 2012-05-11
HANA Platform Edition SPS05
stackID = 67838200103300004105
