Symptom
    1. You have a question about the SAP HANA Hardware Check
    2. You want to know why the SAP HANA Hardware check fails
    3. You want to execute it outside of the SAP HANA Installer(hdbinst)

Other Terms
HanaHwCheck, Revision 18 , Revision 26, SAP HANA, NewDB, in-memory database, installation, appliance

Reason and Prerequisites

Beginning with SAP HANA Revision 18 a new Hardware check is mandatory when executing the SAP HANA Installer. Beginning with Revision 26 it is also executed during the upgrade procedure. The reason for this check is the elimination of problems due to wrong or unsupported Hardware configurations in combination with the SAP HANA appliance.

Solution
    1. Hardware check FAQ:
  • When will the check be executed and what does it do?
Currently the Check is be active in all official SAP HANA releases beginning with SAP HANA Revision 18(for installation) and Revision 26(for upgrade). The check is a script that will be automatically called by the SAP HANA installer and will abort the installation process if it doesn't succeed.
  • Is there a way to disable the check?
No. SAP HANA is an appliance and highly optimized for specificHardware configurations which have been deigned and tested together with our Hardware Partners. Outside of these validated configurations the SAP HANA Performance and stability can not beguaranteed.
    2. What it means when the check fails:
  • When the check returns a 'not supported' result in either 'System Manufacturer','System Product Name','CPU Model','OS','Memory Total' or 'Core Count' please check the values against the SAP HANA Product Availability Matrix(PAM) which is loacted here: http://global.sap.com/community/ebook/2014-09-02-hana-hardware/enEN/index.html . If your configuration is not listed please contact your Hardware vendor.
  • If either one of the Data or Log device checks mentions that it is not big enough, make sure that at least 4 times the physical memory has to be available(free) for the data volume and in addition 1 times memory has to be available(free) on the Log volume. You can check the free memory on your mountpoints with a 'df -h' command. In case your Filesystem doesn't meet these size requirements please contact your Hardware vendor.
    3. You want to execute the check yourself outside of the installer.
  • The check is automatically delivered with your Revision and can be standalone executed anytime. It is a python script named 'HanaHwCheck.py' and located in '/usr/sap/<SID>/HDB<instanceNumber>/exe/python_support'. In this directory a 'python HanaHwCheck.py' command will execute the check. Please be aware that due to some dmidecode commands in the check it has to be executed as root.
