SAP HANA Graph Frequently Asked Questions:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Overview
Q: What is SAP HANA graph?
A: In SAP HANA SP9 we have announced native graph data storage and processing capabilities in the SAP HANA platform.
SAP HANA graph supports well-known property graph model of
vertices and directed edges with variable attribute sets. SAP HANA graph
is supported by powerful declarative graph query language GEM (Graph
Exploration and Manipulation language).
Q: What can I do with SAP HANA graph?
A: SAP HANA graph helps you build graph data sets within
the same HANA database using intuitive query language called GEM. It
opens up opportunities build new applications such as recommendation
engines, predictive analytics, financial fraud analytics, social
analytics, network analytics in addition to enhancing traditional
business applications such as Supply Chain Management, Product Lifecycle
Management, Product Batch Traceability, or Transport and Delivery.
Example: In
financial application space, it is easy to monitor money transfers and
identify illegal transactions by tracing payments at various transaction
points.
Q: What are the different use cases and the business value of SAP HANA graph?
A: SAP HANA graph provides the ability to answer an
entirely new set of business question that were either difficult or not
possible within relational databases. Due to mobile and social
environments around, enterprise data is lot more connected than ever
before and business have the opportunity to unearth hidden information.
There are endless use cases catering to all major industry sectors. Here are a few:
- Financial Applications - can track for illegal money transactions for better compliance with authorities
- Retailers - can leverage relationships and purchasing behaviors within its customer base for targeted advertisements and promotions to improve sales
- Logistics companies - can reroute deliveries during emergencies using optimal path and in the process take advantage of spatial data for better knowledge on area geography
- O&G or utility - companies can pinpoint and strategize maintenance activities
- Master Data Management - can be better served by graph databases with effective master data hierarchies
- Retail and Distribution companies - can effectively back track shipments and deliveries in case of product recall situations
- Manufacturing companies - can better manage BOM of manufactured goods with hierarchies and dependencies
- Transportation - companies can track assets and analyze scheduling and routing
Availability and Editions
Q: Are the native SAP HANA graph features and capabilities generally available?
A: As of SAP HANA SPS09, the native graph engine will be
released for selected customers as controlled- Early Adoption. Please
see SAP Note 2069537
for more information. This essentially means that customer or partners
should contact and engage with SAP Product Management May Chen at may.chen@sap.com for support for their graph projects and initiatives.
Q: Is this capability available in all SAP HANA Editions?
A: Yes, every SAP HANA SP9 full use, run-time, cloud, etc.
edition will have this capability (LREA, DB Edition for BW, Platform,
Enterprise, Insights, AWS, HANA ONE).
Q: Do I need to install a new package to enable this
functionality? Are there any additional libraries to load or
configurations necessary to get SAP HANA graph to work?
A: There are no additional components, libraries, or
packages need to be installed, the graph capabilities are shipped with
HANA; however, it is disabled by default. Basically, the first thing
that you have to do is to enable the graph engine by changing the
configuration parameter to set graph engine is enabled. (Please see
Getting Started Guide for the detailed information.)
Q: Is there a separate cost to use SAP HANA graph?
A: No, there is no additional cost or license required to
use graph with SAP HANA capabilities. The only exception is the SAP HANA
Base + Options edition in which there is a specific Advanced Data
Processing Option which covers graph.
Capabilities
Q: Which SAP applications are currently using SAP HANA graph capabilities?
A: SAP HANA graph is currently part of HANA SPS08. SAP
Medical Insight 2.0 is using SAP HANA graph since SPS07; SAP Supply
Chain Management Integrated Business Planning 4.0 also using SAP HANA
graph; and SAP SuccessFactors LearnFit is going live Feb. 2015 with SAP
HANA graph topower knowledge recommendation engines.
Q: Does SAP HANA graph comply with any industry standards?
A: At this point, no standards exist for property graph models or respective query languages.
Q: What is a Property Graph Model?
A: In Property Graph Model, the data represent we call
vertices and edges which can have various attributes sets. And
attributes on vertices or on edges can be changed at any point in time.
Also, vertices have the same type don
Q: What is GEM?
A: GEM stands for Graph Exploration and Manipulation
language. GEM is an intuitive declarative graph query and manipulation
language created by SAP to access, explore and manipulate the graph data
model.
Q: How do I query on SAP HANA graph data?
A: Using GEM, or refer to SAP HANA Graph Getting Started Guide SPS09 (For SAP Internal).
Q: What are key features of SAP HANA graph?
A: SAP HANA graph supports schema-flexible and scalable
data store for storage, processing, combination, exploration, and
analysis of irregularly structured data with complex and dynamic
relationships to generate insight and competitive advantage. Its key
features include:
- Well-known property graph model of vertices and directed edges with variable attribute sets
- Tightly integrated into SAP HANA for good performance and to allow combination of data from the relational, text, geo/spatial, and graph engines
- Powerful declarative graph query and manipulation language (GEM)
- First version of an internal API for developing application-specific graphalgorithms directly in the database engine; a generic Graph Function Library is planned
- Full transactional (ACID) properties to guarantee data consistency
Q: Do you need a dedicated SAP HANA database for hosting graph data and applications?
A: No. SAP HANA as a unified platform capable of hosting
graph along with relational, analytical, spatial, and other applications
and data within the same database.
Q: Can I develop and deploy SAP HANA graph application on SAP HANA Cloud Platform?
A: Yes, if HANA graph is enabled in the HANA image used in the HANA Cloud.
Q: How is RDF graph model different from property graph model with attributes?
A: The Property Graph Model is the richer graph data model
than the labeled graph model (RDF). For example, RDF does not support
the representation of attributes of edges and does not understand
vertices as complete objects described by possibly multiple attributes.
Q: Can we run RDF graph model open source applications on SAP HANA graph engine?
A: Not directly, but we have a first advanced prototype of
an RDF importer for HANA that allows us to easily import RDF if needed.
