2021789 - SAP HANA Revision and Maintenance Strategy

Symptom
You're seeking guidance on when to implement which revision type and version of an SAP HANA Revision, depending on your specific scenario.

Other Terms
SAP HANA revision strategy, SAP HANA Maintenance Revision, SAP HANA Datacenter Service Point,

Reason and Prerequisites
  • You are facing planned or unplanned maintenance of the SAP HANA database to a SAP HANA Revision 69 or newer
  • You are familiar with SAP HANA Revisions, SAP HANA Maintenance Revisions and SAP HANA Datacenter Service Points,
as described in the SAP HANA Revision Strategy document available from https://service.sap.com/~sapidb/011000358700001182742013

Solution
SAP is strongly committed to supporting all of its customers by shipping regular corrections and updates for the SAP HANA Platform and all of its components. With the availability of SAP HANA Revisions, SAP HANA Maintenance Revision and the SAP HANA Datacenter Service Point, SAP provides several options to maintain or update to a new version of SAP HANA. In the following we provide guidance as to when - and on the base of which Revision – SAP HANA customers should schedule their maintenance:
  • Customers running SAP HANA in a non-production environment or with a planned Go-live date more than 6 weeks in advance, may adopt new SAP HANA Support Package Stacks at any time of their personal choosing, depending on their individual requirements and demands. SAP further proposes the implementation of the highest SAP HANA Revisions available on SAP Service Marketplace in case of any SW related issues to benefit from incremental, but non-disruptive improvements, provided by the latest SAP HANA Revisions.
  • To customers running SAP HANA in production environments or with a planned Go-live of less than 6 weeks, SAP recommends to stay on the current Support Package Stack until the next SAP HANA Datacenter Service Point is reached. SAP therefore provides SAP HANA Maintenance Revisions, which allow to stay on an older SPS for up to three months longer. These Maintenance Revision contain only a subset of available fixes, identified to be relevant in particular for production environments. Once the SAP HANA Datacenter Service Point is reached, SAP strongly recommends to update their system to the referenced, or any newer SAP HANA Revision of the same SPS. Note, that with respect to SAP HANA Platform downward compatibility earlier Revisions may be gradually removed for SAP Service Marketplace.
Note: Customers who already downloaded or run a certain SAP HANA Revision referenced by a SAP HANA Datacenter Service Point don't need to update to a successor Revision, unless they are facing an issue or there’s a SAP Note which reports a bug which applies to the specific scenario the customer is running. In any other case, once there is a successor Revision already released, SAP recommends this Revision to be used to ensure all available fixes as of date are being adopted.
