1910140 - How to Handle Alert 20 ‘Table growth of non-partitioned column-store tables’

Symptom
This Knowledge Base Article (KBA) is part of a series of HANA Operation Recommendations.
Its focus is on providing best practice instruction on handling HANA Alerts related to How to Handle Alert ‘Table growth of non-partitioned column-store tables’ (Alert ID 20 - Table growth of non-partitioned column-store tables).
This check determines the total memory size for table growth of not partitioned column table.


Environment
SAP HANA Database SPS 08 and higher.
Instructions in this Knowledge Base Article have been created on a SAP HANA Database Revision 81 (Support Package Stack SPS08) and may differ in other revisions.


Cause
This alert would be triggered when following prerequisites are met for column tables.
  • The column table is not partitioned.
  • The column table has a significant growth over the last hour.
  • Initial load of data into HANA system. 


Resolution
Complementary to the steps below it is recommended to define required communication between basis teams and application/end-user teams on:
  1. Communication of  schedule and data volume of planned data loads
  2. Communication and authorities in case a load has to be terminated
PROCEDURE
  1. Check Alerts
  2. Check column store memory size in total
  3. Optimize Table Partitioning
  4. Consider to split the column table into partitions.
