1823343 - Deactivating log mode LEGACY with SAP HANA SPS 07

Symptom

We plan to stop support for log mode LEGACY in SAP HANA Support Package Stack 07.

Other Terms

SAP HANA database and log mode LEGACY

Reason and Prerequisites

You use the log mode LEGACY in your SAP HANA database.

Solution

Since the availability of software version 1.00.20.355749 (SAP HANA SPS 03) of the SAP HANA database on November 15, 2011, log mode LEGACY is still supported. However, it is no longer recommended. As alternatives, log mode NORMAL and, to a limited extent, log mode OVERWRITE are available.

For productive systems, we strongly recommend log mode NORMAL because it provides the highest security with regard to the restoration of data for a recovery of the SAP HANA database. In log mode NORMAL, the system automatically creates log backups that can be processed in addition to the data backups for a recovery. However, more backup space is required in this log mode due to the log backups. Therefore, a operational concept for administrating data and log backups is a prerequisite for using this log mode.

If you are currently still using the LEGACY log mode in your SAP HANA database, make sure you know how to convert to the NORMAL log mode on time and adjust your schedules.

For more information about the log modes, refer to the chapter Backing Up and Recovering in the SAP HANA Administration Guide (go to SAP Help Portal http://help.sap.com/hana_appliance). For more details about the log mode conversion to NORMAL, refer to SAP Note 1645183.
